Vehicle Information Numbers, 1978-1979, 1981-1996 We are still working on a listing for the 1980 model year. This is the year when the Feds had made it mandatory to change to the 17 digit code. It seems that since some of the 1980 models were produced in 1979 they were on the old system and that some were produced on the new 17 digit code system.
